Statement on housing by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

From building more homes to helping you save, here are four things we’re doing to make housing more affordable:

To help bring down the cost we need to increase supply. That’s why we’re working with local governments to build 100,000 new homes quickly. The Housing Accelerator Fund helps cut red tape and fast-tracks construction. We introduced the tax-free First Home Savings Account, which is helping thousands of Canadians save for a down payment. To curb speculation and make sure Canadians have access to homes, we’ve temporarily banned non-Canadians who have no intention of living in our country from buying residential property. And through initiatives like the National Housing Strategy, we’ve already invested billions of dollars to build and repair nearly half a million homes and to support nearly 2 million households.

We know more needs to be done. That’s why we’re going to continue working with all levels of government and take historic steps to make housing more affordable for all Canadians.
