Surrey – Fleetwood-Port Kells MP Nina Grewal, pictured, is eagerly anticipating the implementation of new CRTC regulations that will control the loudness of television commercials. The regulations, which take effect on Saturday, September 1st, were first proposed by Grewal in February 2011 as part of Bill C-621.

“I am pleased that my legislation brought the issue to the fore, generated debate across Canada, and produced action to address the issue,” said Grewal. “Regulators in the US and United Kingdom have already taken concrete steps to control the volume of commercials. It was time for the CRTC to follow-suit with its own rules.”

“Canadians have grown tired of having to reach for the remote control every time a commercial comes on their TV. While loud commercials may seem a small irritant, it’s a daily stress that could and should be relieved from the shoulders of Canadians.”

“My legislation proposed to turn the volume down on television commercials by requiring the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to make regulations under the Broadcasting Act to limit the loudness of advertisements broadcast on television. The regulations will follow the best practices of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), the standards agency for North American broadcasters, and set target dialogue levels for all programming, thereby preventing startling variations of audio when commercials come on. While my bill died on the House of Common’s Order Paper, the CRTC has moved ahead on its own and is now implementing the measures I proposed.”

“Today we must congratulate ourselves for a job well done, as we have now extinguished another nuisance from daily life,” concluded Grewal.
