Former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland launched her intention to run for the Liberal Party of Canada’s leadership on Sunday in Toronto.

Freeland, who went to university (Harvard) and lived and worked in the United States, Canada’s largest trade partner, asserted that she is the right person to deal with the challenges that will be brought up by the new administration in that country. She announced that she is going to fight for Canada.

Freeland has wide and profound experience in journalism and politics, having served as Foreign Minister, Trade Minster, Finance Minister, Deputy Prime Minster, among others. As Trade Minister she successfully negotiated trade deals with the USA and some European countries. She had also held senior positions in London’s Financial Times, the Globe and Mail and Reuters.

House Leader Karina Gould also announced her bid on Sunday from her hometown of Burlington in Ontario. She described herself as a grassroots candidate.
