Economist and banker Mark Carney was on Sunday evening announced as the new leader of Canada’s Liberal party which is currently the party in power.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said back in January that he was going to step down to give way to a new liberal party leader after severe pressure from within his party and the opposition for him to resign. The Liberal party organised a leadership election and Carney has emerged as the winner. He will be sworn in soon to become Canada’s new Prime Minister. Other prominent Liberals that contested with Carney were former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, former House leader Karina Gould and prominent businessman Frank Baylis.
