Zainab Bangura, the Special Representative of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sexual Violence, is in the West African country of Mali where violence against women is on the rise amid an upsurge in fighting in the north of the country.

The SRSG arrived in Bamako from Geneva early this week and was welcomed at the airport by the Deputy Special Representative, Davidsen Kaoen.

She is on a six-day working visit to Mali to meet with all actors working on the peace process and addressing issues related to conflict-related sexual violence.
