UNIOSIL COLLABORATES WITH KEY STAKEHOLDERS TO ENHANCE SIERRA LEONE’S HUMAN RIGHTS REPORTING OBLIGATIONS TO INTERNATIONAL TREATY MONITORING BODIES
Freetown, Sierra Leone, 7 May 2008 - - - On May 6, 2008, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation (MFAIC) of the Republic of Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the United Nations Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL), UNDP and the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL), held a National Consultative Conference at Kimbima Hotel in Freetown aimed at enhancing “Sierra Leone’s Reporting Obligations to International Human Rights Treaty Monitoring Bodies”.
Bringing together representatives from the Government and relevant stakeholders, including Civil Society, the Conference considered the adopting of a National Reporting Strategy to effectively kick-start the reporting process by the Government under international treaty bodies.
Immediately following the Consultative Conference, UNIOSIL’s Human Rights and Rule of Law Section has today 7 May 2008 commenced a two-day training program for Focal Persons designated by the various Ministries on reporting under treaty bodies. The training will equip the focal persons with an in-depth understanding of the substantive issues and the reporting process; and provide them with practical skills necessary to proceed with the gathering and analysis of information and the drafting of the reports. Fifty focal persons are expected to be trained.
