By Craig Wellington, Toronto
On September 20th, the date that the Hon. Lincoln Alexander was both sworn into office as Canada’s first Black MP, and as Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the LINC Bust Committee and License to Learn (L2L) are pleased to announce the kick off of the creation phase of the project to place a bust of Lincoln MacCauley Alexander’s at Queen’s Park, through a generous commitment from Black Opportunity Fund.
Behind the project is Quentin VerCetty, the award-winning Toronto artist, who will bring this important piece of history to life. The bust will be prominently placed in the Ontario legislative building at Toronto’s Queen’s Park and will be part of its educational program and tours.
This will be the first statue of a Black person ever erected at Queen’s Park — we hope that it continues to serve as an inspiration for all, especially Black and racialized youth.
We are grateful for the support of Erika Vanessa Alexander, Mitzie Hunter and Craig Wellington. We’d also like to thank RBC Foundation, along with individual donors, for their continued generosity.
