The Honourable Mayann Elizabeth Francis was the 31st Lieutenant Governor of the province of Nova Scotia in Canada from 2006 to 2012. She was the first Black Nova Scotian and the second woman to be appointed as the vice-regal representative. She also served a four-year commission as Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of three Intelligence Companies in the Canadian Forces.
Mayann was a human rights advocate who worked as the Director and CEO of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission from 1999 to 2006.
M. E. Francis has been recognized for her contributions and achievements with the Silver Plaque Award from the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission in 1974, the Harry Jerome Award in 2000, the Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, and other honorary degrees from many universities in the Atlantic provinces. She currently has an award in her name at Nova Scotia Community College that provides financial assistance to students.
