With the election of Brigadier General (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio by Sierra Leone’s main opposition party (the SLPP) over the weekend, Sierra Leonean politics is from now on going to be very interesting as the two main political parties (the APC and SLPP) get ready to face each other in next year’s elections.
Despite his military background and past, we would like to imagine that the new SLPP leader is now more mature and more experienced and would not allow hotheads to influence his pronouncements and decisions. We think and hope he would work hard together with his supporters to see that Sierra Leone does not return to the dark days of violence and mayhem.
On the other hand, we want to believe President Ernest Koroma is always ready to work with the opposition as he steers the ship of state towards the 2012 elections. Infact he was quoted recently as saying "elections are not a life and death issue." We totally agree with him.
The people of Sierra Leone need and want peace and progress. They want food, medicine, clean drinking water, schools, good governance, and so on but you cannot have those things without peace. We are sure the country’s political party leaders are aware of that. So we say, let there be peace.
