The German football community is stunned by the recent death of goalkeeper Robert Enke. The 32-year-old player of Hannover 96 committed suicide at a level crossing, where he was hit by a train. Enke was a German international football player and was expected to be first choice goalkeeper at the World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
The former player of Benfica Lissabon and FC Barcelona battled depression for several years after having lost his three-year-old daughter due to heart failure. Nevertheless the death of Hannover’s captain came totally unexpected. Enke left behind his wife Teresa and their adopted daughter Leila.
German football is under shock. It’s not clear whether the friendly match against Chile - planned for Saturday(today) - will take place.
Germany’s football idol Franz Beckenbauer told the BILD-newspaper: "I feel endless loss and sorrow. When you receive news such as this, all other problems seem small."
German chancellor Angela Merkel wrote a letter to Enke’s widow. Thousands of fans and friends mourned Robert Enke throughout the day. With Robert Enke the football community all over the world did not only lose one of it’s best players but one of the best characters it had.
