Editor’s Note: This poem was written when Barack Obama became the first black president of the United States of America in 2008.
On A Day Like This
By Saidu Bangura, Las Palmas.
Whenever and wherever
I see a Blackman
I will remember
King, Mandela and Obama:
A dream, stubborn hope
And with time, a change
In the circumstances of a people –
(A realization of the dream
On a day like this?)
But it is not about the colour
As it is about believing in
Scrubbing off all the scars
Left by the shackling chains
That once put us down;
Tearing off the curtains
That once divided You and I
And work towards ONE goal,
ONE destiny, ONE WORLD.
Praia, 05 November 2008.
