On February 17 2022, US Ambassador to Sierra Leone David Reimer presented a grant from the World Monuments Fund to the government of Sierra Leone to begin restoration of the old Fourah Bay College building at Cline Town in Freetown. On hand to receive the grant and sign the necessary papers was Tourism Minister Memunatu Pratt.
Fourah Bay College is the oldest university in Africa, south of the Sahara (1827), and produced some of the earliest intellectuals in the continent. It is for this reason that Sierra Leone was once described as the Athens of West Africa.
