Sierra Leone has had several security incidents since President Julius Maada Bio came to power in 2018 after being democratically elected.

In the recent election he beat his main opponent Dr. Samura Kamara who did not campaign in most of the south and east of the country and did not have polling agents in most of the south and east. Why? It’s because he did not have money. Most of his major party donors refused to finance his campaign. Why? Because there is no democracy within the APC under Samura. This is something most of the members of the international community do not know.

On the other hand, the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki- Sawyerr’s campaign was heavily financed by many donors at home and abroad and she had polling agents in every polling station in Freetown and she vigorously campaigned everywhere in Freetown even though she had a very formidable opponent. That was how she won.

Coming back to security, Sierra Leone has never been more secure under Maada Bio, someone that fought on the government side for more than ten years in a brutal civil war. All he needs is more sophisticated weapons and ammunition to secure the country. He is also working on governance issues with the opposition parties.

The Sierra Leone army has seasoned and experienced fighters who can secure the country on their own under Lt. General Peter Lavahun ( photo) who himself fought in the civil war. The current Inspector General police, William Fayia Sellu, was one of the bodyguards of former president Ahmed Tejan Kabbah. He knows what to do. So Sierra Leone does not need foreign troops on the ground. All she needs is more weapons and military advisers. That is all.
