Nigerian political parties and politicians are in the midst of a serious political campaign to determine who would govern that African behemoth later this month,
Meanwhile thousands of Nigerian refugees are fleeing attacks from Boko Haram into foreign countries where their compatriots are already crouching in make-shift tents.
President Goodluck Jonathan and other presidential candidates are waiting for the right moment after the elections to go after Boko Haram.
Indeed, one of the presidential candidates, General Buhari, has said he will eliminate Boko Haram if elected. Jonathan has expressed similar sentiments. So this forth-coming election in Nigeria is having Boko Haram as main theme to win hearts and minds.
Meanwhile it seems the armies of Chad and Niger are currently taking town after town against the insurgents. That’s good news.
The Nigerian leader should however keep on talking about Boko Haram while on the campaign trail. Now is the time to provide more resources to the Nigerian armed forces, food and drugs to Nigerian refugees across Nigeria’s borders and the internally displaced. International organizations cannot do everything.
Boko Haram is a real menace not only for Nigeria but for the whole of Africa.
