It was with great joy that a Sierra Leonean diplomat in Washington D.C revealed to me news of Natasha Beckley being runner up at the annual Miss Africa USA 2010 pageant held in Washington, Saturday July 24Th.
According to the diplomat, “Every Sierra Leonean at home and abroad should rally around Natasha as she prepares for the big show- Miss World, scheduled for September in China.
Natasha was beaten to a respectable second position by Guinea’s Fifi Suma.
As this press awaits an interview with Natasha, here a few things to know about the ‘Sierra Leonean Wonder Girl’.
She is the founder of the “Save Darfur” group in the University of Virginia (UVA-wise), volunteer for a Christian NGO called World Hope International, worker with the Food Bank in Norton, Virginia, distributing food to residents and those in need.
Bilingual in French (major) and English, Ms. Beckley’s aspirations know no boundaries. She aims to study for a Masters in International Relations.
About her ties to her country; Sierra Leone, Natasha recalled with fond memories her experience of Christmas 2009: “Women in Sierra Leone are very beautiful, and I am proud to say that I come from four tribes that have contributed to my unique looks, and my lively personality…While in Port Loko I got the chance to interact with beautiful elderly women that modelled the word “natural beauty”. They were in their seventies (70s) but they worked in the farms and took care of grandchildren with a happy spirit. In their eyes one could tell that these women are God fearing, and they have lived a tough life, but they were thankful for what they had. All I could say to myself was, “God please let me grow old as gracefully as these women.”
