My take on the census and the ongoing debate by the opposition:
By Anonymous, Freetown
On the Census and it’s outcome ( provisional results) perhaps a few questions need to be posed:
Did the government (or Parliament) pass the necessary census law?
Did Statistics Sierra Leone publicize the census for all eligible to participate?
Did some politicians openly oppose and challenge the census?
Did some parts of the country have councillors chasing census officers out of their communities?
Did Statistics Sierra Leone use Paramount Chiefs to encourage their people to come out and register and they were challenged by some politicians?
Did opposition political parties form a coalition against the census?
Did the main opposition political party openly challenge the census when announced?
Did Statistics Sierra Leone extend the census deadlines leading to extensions for registration to encourage people to come out and be counted after the original deadline in what was called mopping up operations by Statistics Sierra Leone?
If people love Sierra Leone and are sincere to themselves let them honestly answer these questions. The seeming academic arguments should have come long before now so that people see reason and appreciate the need to come and be counted. Data collected by Statistics Sierra Leone is what has been analyzed and not data that is unavailable but imagined. The results is what we have now, we either wait for another mid term census after 5 years or wait another 10 years.
