According to a statement from the Anti-Corruption Commission of Sierra Leone, they have recovered Le187 Million in cash, in respect of a case against the Mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr (photo) and the Freetown City Council, in full settlement established of the case of ineligible and improper payment to a non-staff of Council that was flagged by the Auditor-General’s report 2019; thereby bringing to a close the issue.
The recovery is part of the ACC’s civil non-conviction-based asset recovery processes.
This action means the Mayor has been saved from the embarassment of being charged to court and possibly convicted of misappropriation of funds. She likely plans to contest again for her seat or for the running mate position in her party in the elections next year and a conviction would have made that impossible.
