Freetown: Cleaning Exercise Ends in Failure

Reports reaching us from Freetown indicate that last Saturday’s cleaning exrecise in the city was a great disaster.

Residents told the Vanguard that there were not enough dump trucks to take the mountains of garbage to the dump sites outside the city. Streets were blocked with garbage and instead of resolving the problem, the latest effort by the authorities has merely worsened the problem.

Unconfirmed reports say 77 million leones had been spent on Saturday’s disastrous cleaning day.

Freetown’s mayor, Winstanley Bankole Johson, has always complained of lack of government support in his efforts to rid city of its mountains of garbage.
