Debates do not generally change much in the perceptions of their audiences. According to commentators who watched the recent debates in English and French in Canada, the race is still very tight.

Perhaps the most important quality of debates is that they allows voters to read body language as often happens in job interviews. Interviewers (voters) assess interviewees (candidates) to help them make the right choice.. Most voters had already made up their minds on who to vote for but the undecided needed more information. Canadians must have been looking for who:

1. Would be able to protect them and help maintain Canada’s prestige and integrity against the new American administration. They see that administration as a real and existential threat far above the bread and butter issues of the day. Sovereignty and national pride are also the pillars of that position.

2. They will be looking for somebody with a knowledge and experience of international business and economics to guide or navigate Canada through the unjustified and very dangerous tariffs imposed by the American leader.

3. Canadians would want a leader that will control the cost of living, protect social secretary, protect the healthcare the country has been known for and many other determinants of a prosperous society.

Mark Carney (Liberals) and Pierre Poilievre (Conservatives) are the front-runners with Carney (photo) leading.
