Purpose
By Willie James King, Montgomery, Alabama, USA.
In a stilled
summer sunlit
part of the lake,
I can see burnished,
silver, golden scales
of a big-mouth afloat
above its bed,
who’s gasping,
grasping all
that swims,
floats toward it,
from underwater grasses,
weeds, like gift offerings
to a lone lord. No,
to this fish,
minding its business
thoughtless,
it seems, yet,
filled with purpose,
attentive to it too.
