Guinea: Journalist attacked by presidential guard

Lansana Babara Camara, a reporter of "La Guinée Actuelle", a privately-owned newspaper, was violently assaulted on 24 August 2008 by a member of the Autonomous Presidential Security Battalion (BASP), the presidential guard of Guinean President Lansana Conté, in Kindia, a suburb of Conakry, the capital.

The MFWA correspondent reported that the attack left the journalist unconscious. He bled profusely and his face was swollen.

The correspondent said a number of BASP personnel were in the area where Camara and his colleagues had gone on assignment. When he inquired of one of the officers whether the president was in the area, one guard became furious at the question and attacked him.

The guard also seized Camara’s work equipment and then fled.

The journalist was treated at the Kindia hospital.and discharged.
